TIERRA WHACK

Tierra Whack born August 11, 1995 is a rap-artist from North Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a teenager, she performed as Dizzle Dizz, but reverted back to her birth name in 2017. Her debut album, Whack World, was released on May 30, 2018. Whack World is a theme park of an album in which Whack sings, raps, and slips in and out of exaggerated voices across 15 songs that, at different moments, might be described as hip-hop, R&B, pop, or country. Every track clocks in at exactly one minute and is accompanied by its own distinctive video. While it’s true that this formula is—not accidentally—optimized for Instagram, Whack World is far from a social media stunt. Each song is an economic gem, capturing and tidily packaging one of Whack’s many moods. When watched back-to-back, the visuals connect it all together, guiding the viewer through a bright, surreal universe that has ample room for grief and joy and annoyance and goofiness and self-love.

TERRACE MARTIN

“I can’t sit through a jazz concert.” Not the kind of admission you might expect to hear from a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, rapper, singer, engineer and producer known for his genre-bending prowess rooted in hip-hop and jazz. But when Terrace Martin, L.A.’s native son, gets going, he’s not one to hold back. “A lot of the time, most jazz artists are so into their thing that there’s a disconnect with the people and the crowd. No one is moving,” he continues, before passionately elaborating: “When you look at the old pictures or listen to grandparents — Black people — talk, jazz was about making everybody feel good and smile. People danced; it was responsive. It wasn’t about looking at people like they’re in a motherf—ing museum, like this upper echelon of this hierarchy of art. He counts among his influences the legend Herbie Hancock, jazz apostle Miles Davis, hip-hop producer and emcee Q-Tip (whom he refers to as the “Master Teacher”)

SAINTÉ

Sainté’s music makes his hometown of Leicester feel like the centre of the universe. Famous for its multi-ethnic population, Leicester City Football Club, and for being the first major city in the UK to have its own local radio station—BBC Radio Leicester, launched back in 1967—it’s pretty much bound into scripture that Leicester would conjure up a talent like Sainté.

While it’s all too commonplace to call every artist unique, Sainté’s music radiates standalone energy. He has less in common with his UK drill and trap contemporaries and more similarities with cloudy Stateside rappers like Dom Kennedy or Isaiah Rashad. Everything from the Dave Meyers and Hype Williams-inspired visuals for “No Love” to his carefully curated wardrobe—a futureproof take on what you’d see in an old issue of The Source or XXL Magazine—Sainté is stepping different to everybody else in today’s UK music scene.
